14 Philipp Clüver (1580–1622) – "Totius Terrae Sanctae Delineatio" – Hand-Coloured Copper Engraving (1697)

This beautifully detailed hand-coloured map titled Totius Terrae Sanctae Delineatio presents an early cartographic depiction of the Holy Land. Originally published in Leiden in 1697, the map divides the territory into biblical regions with vibrant border outlines. In the upper left, an ornate cartouche features biblical figures and symbols of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
Clüver’s work is considered foundational in historical geography. As a geographer and historian in Leiden, he published several influential works, including detailed ancient geography texts and biblical atlases. His maps were widely used for educational purposes throughout Europe.
This copper engraving is coloured by hand, typical of maps from the 17th century, when individual prints were carefully painted with watercolours to enhance legibility and beauty.
