20 Philipp Clüver (1580–1622) – "Dania, Svecia et Norvegia" – Hand-Colored Engraved Map (c. 1661)

This finely detailed 17th-century map by Philipp Clüver presents the kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (Dania, Svecia et Norvegia), masterfully engraved and richly hand-colored. Published circa 1661 in Amsterdam, the map reflects early modern cartographic knowledge of the Nordic region, including parts of Finland, Livonia, and the Baltic Sea.
Clüver’s engraving features decorative cartouches, Latin place names, and period-specific geographical interpretations. Notably, the borders are delineated in red, a stylistic trait common in early hand-colored maps. Coastal outlines, rivers, and mountain ranges are finely etched, while surrounding seas are named in Latin—including Oceanus Germanicus and Mare Balticum.
Philipp Clüver, considered the father of historical geography, was a German geographer and classicist whose works were foundational in early modern geography. His maps were widely circulated and influential throughout Europe during the 17th century.
