This delicately hand-coloured woodcut presents three flowering varieties of Lavandula (Lavender), captured with the meticulous clarity typical of 17th-century herbal science. The engraving is from Kräuter-Buch, a German herbal compendium attributed to Johann Joachim Becher, one of the most influential polymaths of his era.

Becher’s botanical works reflected a transitional moment in Europe — where alchemy, folk medicine, and emerging science converged on the printed page. Lavender was especially prized for its antiseptic and calming properties, making it both a medicinal staple and a symbolic plant of purity and serenity.

The surrounding Gothic-script medicinal text outlines the therapeutic uses and traditional applications of the plant. These pages were not merely illustrations — they were tools for doctors, pharmacists, monks, and early scientists.
