These copper-plate engravings with original hand-colouring by watercolour originate from the work ”English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth”.
James Sowerby (1757-1822) was an English naturalist, illustrator, and mineralogist known for his extensive contributions to botanical illustration and natural history. He produced numerous detailed illustrations of plants, fungi, shells, and minerals, and his work was influential in advancing scientific understanding and education during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Sowerby's publications include the multi-volume "English Botany" and "Mineral Conchology," which remain significant references in their fields.
