131 William MacKenzie – Antique Lithographs - Set of 2 Mammals Print – "Mammalia: Indian Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, American Tapir, Manatee, Dugong, and Steller's Sea Cow" - (c.1860s)

This set of two detailed antique lithographs from the 19th-century zoological series published by William MacKenzie showcases an impressive array of large mammals, including the Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius), American Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), American Manatee (Trichechus manatus), Dugong (Dugong dugon), and the extinct Steller’s Sea Cow (Hydrodamalis gigas).
The left plate features terrestrial mammals from the Order Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla, known for their massive size and semi-aquatic habits. The Indian Rhinoceros, depicted in its armored skin, is one of the most iconic creatures of the Asian subcontinent, while the Hippopotamus, native to African rivers, showcases its distinctive barrel-shaped body and large jaws. The American Tapir, with its compact frame, is a representative of South American rainforests.
The right plate focuses on marine herbivorous mammals from the Order Sirenia (Sea Cows and Manatees). It includes the American Manatee, a slow-moving aquatic grazer found in coastal waters and rivers, alongside the Dugong, which is more streamlined and adapted to marine life in the Indo-Pacific region. The plate also features the extinct Steller’s Sea Cow, once native to the Bering Sea, which was hunted to extinction by the late 18th century.
These highly detailed hand-colored lithographs were part of a scientific zoological publication documenting animal species across the globe. The engravings showcase remarkable anatomical accuracy, emphasizing the 19th-century fascination with natural history and taxonomy.
