125 Johann Frisch - Antique Engraving - The Crane, Grus Grus - Birds in Germany

This originally hand-coloured engraving is from Johann Leonhard Frisch's Vorstellung der Vogel in Teutschland und Beyläufig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben…und Nach Iheren Natürlichen Farben. The work was completed by his son Jodocus Leopold in 1763 and published by Friedrich Wilhelm Birnstiel in Berlin.
Johann Leonhard Frisch had a diverse career as a singer, minister, interpreter for the German army, and a headmaster in Berlin. His academic interests included natural history and the creation of a Cabinet of Curiosities, which inspired the illustrations in his work. He is sometimes credited with the discovery of Prussian blue and played a key role in cultivating mulberry trees in Berlin in an effort to produce silk.
