1 Philip Carteret / John Abraham Bayly - Solomon Islands - Map of Queen Charlotte's Islands - Santa Cruz Islands - Isles de la Reine Charlotte.. - 1761-1780
”Isles de la Reine Charlotte..”
Hand-coloured detailed chart of the Santa Cruz islands, to the north of the New Hebrides, with Carteret's track in "Swallow"; including an inset chart of Carteret and Gower Islands. Relief is shown by hachuring; vegetation is marked by small tree-symbols, revealing that the tops of the mountains were wooded. Along the explored coast of the "Isle Du Lord Egmont", palm trees and huts have been drawn, perhaps marking native settlements. A particularly detailed volcano spewing smoke is shown in profile to the North of this island. Prevailing winds are marked with arrows.
Published in an edition of John Hawkesworth's atlas to accompany a French edition of Captain James Cook's voyages to the Southern Hemisphere, published 1774.
Philip Carteret (1733–1796) was a British naval officer and explorer best known for his role in several voyages of discovery during the 18th century. He accompanied John Byron on the HMS Dolphin and later commanded his own expedition aboard the Swallow, where he explored parts of the Pacific, including the discovery of Carteret Islands. His navigational expertise contributed significantly to the mapping and understanding of remote regions.
John Abraham Bayly (active 1755–1794) was an English engraver known for his detailed and precise work, particularly in map engraving. Bayly collaborated with several prominent cartographers of his time, producing finely executed maps that were used in atlases and naval charts. His skill in engraving brought clarity and elegance to the maps he worked on, making them valuable resources for navigation and study.
