Very rare old master engraving by Pieter Coecke van Aelst depicting Emperor Charles V as the mythical giant Druon Antigoon. Coecke van Aelst was one of the most prominent Dutch artists and engravers of the 16th century, known for his exceptional works and contributions to Flemish art.

The engraving illustrates the myth of Druon Antigoon, a giant who once guarded the bridge over the Scheldt River in Antwerp, demanding a toll from travelers. Those who refused were punished with the loss of a hand, which Antigoon would throw into the river. Eventually, Antigoon met his end at the hands of a young Roman soldier named Brabo, who cut off the giant’s hand and threw it into the river, symbolizing the triumph of bravery over tyranny.

The translated inscription on the pedestal reads: "Giants are subdued by bravery." The text below adds: "Brabo's story finds fresh faith. Peter van Aelst painted the Emperor Charles V in A.D. XXXIII." The engraving also refers to Antwerp's gigantic colossus, which was paraded during the city's solemn fairs, accompanied by four officers bearing banners, driven around the city twice a year.

The piece was dedicated to the noble and respected individuals of Antwerp in 1665, including Mr. Henry Halmaho, knight, Mr. Guilielmo Despomereaulx, councilors, senators, treasurers, and other notable figures, showcasing the connection between art, history, and the influential figures of the time.

Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502–1550) was a prominent Flemish painter, draughtsman, and engraver during the Northern Renaissance. Known for his innovative approach to religious and mythological themes, he worked in a style that blended traditional Flemish realism with the emerging influences of Italian Renaissance art. Coecke van Aelst was highly regarded for his detailed engravings and his contributions to the development of perspective in printmaking. His legacy is marked by his influence on both Flemish art and the wider European Renaissance, and he served as the court painter to Emperor Charles V.
