Nicolas Sanson was a 17th-century French cartographer who played a key role in shifting the center of European mapmaking from the Netherlands to France. As the royal geographer to Louis XIII and Louis XIV, he emphasized geographical accuracy over artistic decoration, producing over 300 influential maps.
